Fresh off the heels of Prada’s AW20 runÂway durÂing Milan FashÂion Week, the luxÂuÂry design house named Raf Simons as co-creÂative direcÂtor.
The BelÂgian designÂer shall work colÂlabÂoÂraÂtiveÂly alongÂside Prada’s head designÂer, MiucÂcia PraÂda. The unpreceÂdentÂed shakeÂup was announced durÂing a press conÂferÂence in Milan, with Simons statÂing the partÂnerÂship is in response to the ever-changÂing fashÂion landÂscape that is movÂing to ‘exclude creÂatives’, notÂing that both he and MiucÂcia aim to strengthÂen and refoÂcus the creÂativÂiÂty of the iconÂic ItalÂian brand.
AccordÂing to a press release issued by PraÂda, the powÂer duo shall share ‘equal responÂsiÂbilÂiÂties for creÂative input and deciÂsion makÂing’. ‘This partÂnerÂship opens a new diaÂlogue, between designÂers wideÂly acknowlÂedged as two of the most imporÂtant and influÂenÂtial of today,’ the press release said. ‘ConÂcepÂtuÂalÂly, it is also a new approach to the very defÂiÂnÂiÂtion of creÂative direcÂtion for a fashÂion brand.’
FoundÂed by her grandÂfaÂther in 1913 as a leather goods shop, MiucÂcia has transÂformed the brand into one of the top luxÂuÂry housÂes in fashÂion hisÂtoÂry. She debuted her first ready-to-wear colÂlecÂtion for PraÂda in 1989, before launchÂing her own brand Miu Miu in 1992. MeanÂwhile Simons is best known for his eponyÂmous line in colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion with AdiÂdas, as well as his creÂative direcÂtor tenures at Jil Sander (2005 — 2012), ChrisÂtÂian Dior (2012 — 2015) and most recentÂly Calvin Klein (2016 — 2018). The design duo have actuÂalÂly known each othÂer since 2005, when Simons was appointÂed the creÂative direcÂtor of Jil Sander, then owned by the PraÂda Group.

Despite the two talÂentÂed designÂers being from very difÂferÂent backÂgrounds, their shared pasÂsion for art, hisÂtorÂiÂcal dress and embrace of the present/future, is what unites them. ‘I strive for someÂthing new,’ PraÂda says, ‘but I’m always influÂenced by the past.’ Whilst Simons told Vogue in 2012 ‘I find it interÂestÂing to make modÂern clothes for modÂern women.. but that might also refer to nosÂtalÂgia for a cerÂtain time.’
The partÂnerÂship between MiucÂcia and Simons is marked as a rarÂiÂty in fashÂion — an indusÂtry where one designÂer, not two, takes the lead of a fashÂion house. HowÂevÂer, there are sevÂerÂal sucÂcessÂful fashÂion partÂnerÂships — most notably DomeniÂco Dolce & SteÂfano GabÂbana, VikÂtor Horsting & Rolf SnoÂeren and LauÂra Kim & FerÂnanÂdo GarÂcia. Albeit the design duos usuÂalÂly join forces at the beginÂning of their career.
For Simons, the groundÂbreakÂing partÂnerÂship with PraÂda is an opporÂtuÂniÂty ‘to relook at how creÂativÂiÂty can evolve in today’s fashÂion sysÂtem.’ When news of the colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion broke, MiucÂcia PraÂda described the brand’s deciÂsion as a breath of fresh air and a gust of new wind.
Under the leadÂerÂship of MiucÂcia, PraÂda is known for breakÂing rules and pushÂing boundÂaries, prizÂing innoÂvaÂtion over inerÂtia. Her guidÂance has sucÂcessÂfulÂly eleÂvatÂed the iconÂic ItalÂian brand to one of the beloved high-fashÂion housÂes. AddressÂing the brands shockÂing move, Vogue described the partÂnerÂship ‘a unique arrangeÂment, [as] there are few examÂples of designÂer founders splitÂting duties with anothÂer creÂative of such high profile.’
With PraÂda known as one of the few EuroÂpean brands citÂed for their forÂward thinkÂing, the two visionÂarÂies could take the fashÂion world by storm. AcknowlÂedgÂing fashÂions changÂing landÂscape, PraÂda has set the guidÂing prinÂciÂples as ‘innoÂvaÂtion and colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion’. Now well-posiÂtioned to change the traÂjecÂtoÂry of the fashÂion indusÂtry, will Raf Simons and MiucÂcia Prada’s colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion fuel creÂativÂiÂty and rejuÂveÂnate their statÂue as a top fashÂion house?
CritÂics may say the announceÂment of Simons joint venÂture has come at a someÂwhat interÂestÂing time. RecentÂly, PraÂda has seen sevÂerÂal strugÂgles both finanÂcialÂly and politÂiÂcalÂly. In addiÂtion to declinÂing sales, the brand was also embroiled in a race row in 2018 due to figÂurines resemÂbling blackÂface, showÂcased in their New York store. EnterÂing a new decade, the first colÂlecÂtion designed by the dynamÂic duo shall encomÂpass all creÂative aesÂthetÂics. Raf Simons and MiucÂcia Prada’s inauÂgurÂal colÂlecÂtion will be Spring/Summer 2021 womÂenswear, which is set to be preÂsentÂed in Milan in SepÂtemÂber 2020.
